Discover more of Museums & Galleries Edinburgh. We welcome group visits, and run a programme of exciting activities for families, schools and adults to accompany our venues exhibition programmes and compliment our unique collections.

Schools Programme

Whilst our museums and galleries are closed to the public, we have developed an exciting, interactive, four-week art programme that can be delivered to primary schools digitally via Microsoft Teams until we can welcome everyone back to our venues again. The City Art Stars programme is inspired by paintings from the City Art Centre as well as our Edinburgh museum collections such as the Museum of Childhood. If you would like your primary school to have the opportunity to take part in this programme, please contact our Schools Engagement Officer, Hannah via to discuss eligibility.

Digital art workshops for families

We have created a series of step-by-step art workshops for children and families to try at home, inspired by our exhibitions and collections:

Your Special Place - Jock McFadyen inspired art workshop

Cityscape Artworks - Jock McFadyen inspired art workshop

Look Outside - Kate Downie inspired art workshop

Tartan Paper Weaving - Robert Burns Day

School and group visits

We welcome school groups to our venues to explore our unique collections. We also welcome group visits from further and higher education and local community groups. If you wish to book a group visit, please complete the group visit form below.

We have teacher led trails for the museums on the Royal Mile available to download and use for your visit.

We recommend downloading and reading the Handy Info PDF first.

When printing the Trails please click ‘PRINT ON THE SHORT SIDE'.

If you would like to discuss the possibility of a tailor-made workshop or tour, please contact our Learning and Programmes Manager on 0131 529 3963 or via

Museum of Childhood

The Writers' Museum

Museum of Edinburgh and The People’s Story

Because of the size and historical layout of our venues, it is not always possible to accommodate group visits where no prior arrangements have been made. To avoid disappointment, please complete the below above as far as reasonably possible in advance of your proposed visit, giving your preferred date and time and two alternatives. Please note the opening hours of the venue you wish to visit before you submit your request.

If your party is large (over 20 people) it may be necessary to split the visits, either by time, venue or both. The Museum of Edinburgh and People's Story Museum, for example, are across the road from each other, and the Museum of Childhood and Writers' Museum are only a few minutes' walk up the Royal Mile.

Admission charges may apply in respect of the Scott Monument, Nelson Monument, Lauriston Castle and some City Art Centre exhibitions (see individual listings for details). Otherwise, group visits are free of charge but donations are always appreciated!
