As we come to the end of our exhibition ‘ Shifting Vistas: 250 Years of Scottish Landscape’ we close with a talk about one of the most popular artists featured in the exhibition and in Scottish Art. The much-loved work of Joan Eardley falls into two distinct categories - the paintings of children she did among the tenements Glasgow’s Townhead and her landscapes, mainly in and around the North-east fishing village of Catterline. This talk follows a journey to see what traces remain of Eardley’s world in both places, and asks why she was drawn to them, and how each brought her a distinctive field of inspiration. Susan Mansfield is a writer, journalist and art critic. She has been writing about the arts and literature in Scotland for 25 years and has been an art critic for The Scotsman newspaper since 2007. She was a staff writer for The Scotsman from 2001 until 2013, working as an interviewer and feature writer with a particular interest in the arts. She is also a poet and playwright and was the joint winner of the Jack Clemo National Poetry Award in 2018.
