Ever wondered how Charlotte Bronte conjured up the feisty Bertha in Jane Eyre, or Alice Walker the inimitable Celie in The Colour Purple? Literature is scattered with examples of audacious women characters, from Lady Macbeth and Jo March to Scout Finch and Bellatrix Lestrange, as well as rewritings of old favourites such as Jean Rhys' imaginative reinterpretation of Bronte's classic.

In this relaxed reading and creative writing session, we'll consider what goes into making the most bold and gutsy heroines by reading some examples from novels and short stories, before having a go at creating our own.
