Makars’ Court is an evolving national literary monument where you can see some of the famous words of great Scottish writers inscribed in the flagstones. The Scots word Makar means ‘one who fashions, constructs, produces, prepares, etc.’ (Dictionary of the Scots Language), and in a literary context it is the role of the poet or author as a skilled and versatile worker in the craft of writing. 2023 marks the 25th Year Anniversary of Makars' Court at the Writers' Museum and to celebrate this we are marking it with a keynote 'In Conversation' event, where Sir Ian Rankin and special guests Sara Sheridan and Edinburgh Makar Hannah Lavery explore the rich history of Scottish Literature and reflect on the writers who have influenced their own writing.
Our Speakers:
Sir Ian James Rankin OBE DL FRSE FRSL FRIAS is a Scottish crime writer and philanthropist, best known for his Inspector Rebus novels delivering crime with a distinct Scottish flavour.
Sara Sheridan is a Scottish activist and writer who works in a variety of genres, though predominantly in historical fiction. She is the creator of the Mirabelle Bevan mysteries. Sara is particularly interested in women's history and has written over 20 books.
Hannah Lavery is a Scottish short story writer, poet, playwright and performer. Her poetry and prose has been published by Gutter Magazine, The Scotsman newspaper, 404 Ink, and others. In September 2021 she took on the role of Edinburgh Makar.
