7pm - 8.30pm on zoom

Local Foreigners is a project by author and photographer, Maryna Sulym. As an immigrant from Ukraine, she is not happy with negative representations of immigrants as victims or threat in the media. She started the project to spread awareness of the diversity and complexity of immigration. Local Foreigners aims to present immigrants as locals by showing that they have everyday problems, families, hobbies, study and work.

This symposium is open to everyone and will explore how migration is represented in the media and in museums, and how this influences people’s perceptions of migration. Speakers will include Maryna Sulym, Dr Sarah Kyambi of Migration Policy Scotland, and Emily Miller of the Migration Museum. The event will be chaired by writer and journalist, Susan Mansfield.

The event is in association with the exhibition, ‘Local Foreigners: the human face of immigration’, on at the Museum of Edinburgh until 11 September. This symposium will be recorded and streamed via our Facebook page at a later date.
