The Museums Collection Centre stores a huge variety of objects from the City’s Social History, Applied Arts and Childhood collections. We also have a small conservation lab. The building is accessible but some objects are stored on an upper floor accessed by a wide metal staircase with open risers and a handrail. Accessible toilets are available.

Find out more about the behind the scenes work going on at the Museum Collections Centre on our Reekie Untold blog.

Tours are led by Museum Collections Centre staff and volunteers. Because we all have our own interests and perspectives, each tour is different.

To book, email MuseumCollectionsCentre@edinburgh.gov.uk or ring 0131 556 9536. Tours are free.

November 6th - Women's Lives in Edinburgh

As artists, merchants, mothers, activists, and more, women have played an important role in the history of Edinburgh. Their stories are often hidden in plain sight: on the outside of a familiar building, the bottom of a piece of pottery, or a cardboard sign that might get thrown away. Explore behind the scenes at the Collections Centre to see what's not on display in the city museums, learn about how these objects are preserved and stored, and find out how Edinburgh Museums are working to record women's lives in the present day.

December to March - tour guide to be confirmed. More details to come.

History Collections

Our history collections trace the development of Edinburgh from 13th century pot fragments, through James Craig’s 1766 New Town plans and Robert Burns’ writing desk, to items created for the 21st century campaign for an independent Scotland.
