Tuesday 8 June, 2pm

Today is World Oceans Day and to celebrate it, Margaret Ritchie is going to offer us an insight into the working lives of the Scottish women who worked as herring gutters and packers in the fish curing trade. As the skilled key workers in this highly successful British export trade, they travelled around Britain’s island and mainland communities, working for salt curing companies. Their experiences will be illustrated by visual images in art and photography as well oral history interviews.

Margaret Ritchie is an academic and artist, currently living in Edinburgh, whose research on Scotland’s fishing industry has focused on the working lives of women in the fishing trades. She has used film, art and written work to illustrate these experiences, and has spoken about her work at conferences both at home and abroad.

Free, but booking essential.

All attendees will be sent joining instructions a day or so before the event. Please check your junk/spam folder if you don't hear from us by an hour before.

The lecture will be on Microsoft Teams, so if you join us on a mobile device (mobile phone or tablet) you will need to download the app (free) from the App Store / Google Play Store beforehand.
