2020 saw 100 years since Leith became part of the City of Edinburgh; prior to that it was a separate burgh. Since we were not able to run these in person during 2020 we are celebrating them this year. Our talks programme explores the rich heritage of Leith and its unique identity.
The rich heritage of Leith has many interesting stories to tell. This talk will explore the variety of notable people who have played golf on Leith Links. Andrew Duncan, the elder October (1744 – 1828) was a British physician and professor at Edinburgh University. He was joint founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Sir Henry Raeburn FRSE RA RSA (1756 - 1823) was a British portrait painter and Scotland's first significant portrait painter since the Union to remain based in Scotland. He served as Portrait Painter to King George IV in Scotland. Jim Scanlon lives in Leith and is a member of Leith local history society and Leith Rules Golf Society.
