Join us as we take to the skies to explore archive, aerial photography which has recorded changes in Edinburgh through the Twentieth Century. We'll take a bird's eye view of iconic landmarks, sporting venues, transport routes, housing developments and the fabric of the city.

This online Teams talk will use archives to discuss how the SNWM came into being and who was involved in making it happen. We'll look at some of the stunning artwork it houses, including stained glass and carved stone.

When Dr Elsie Inglis was told that her services were not needed by the British Army in 1914, she founded the Scottish Women’s Hospital for Foreign Services. By the end of the war there were 14 such hospitals and women from all walks of life flocked to sign up.

In October 1950 a former City Councillor was invited to a flat in St James Square to view some ‘old photos’. He discovered an assortment of tin boxes containing a remarkable collection of around 450 glass plate negatives taken by a little-known Edinburgh photographer Thomas Begbie.

This year, the Friends of the City Art Centre will celebrate their 50th Anniversary. To commemorate this jubilee occasion our Schools Engagement Officer invited schools to participate in an art competition with the theme of friendship. Generous prizes were kindly donated by the Friends.
