If you're looking for things to do for adults or all the family, you've come to the right place.
Set among 30 acres of woodland and beautiful gardens, Lauriston Castle is a special place to visit. The splendid old glasshouse, set into the woodland, is the perfectly magical place to enjoy our programme of garden events, art activities and craft workshops.
As the weather turns colder, we move indoors into the old castle kitchen where you will get a cosy welcome and lots of creative inspiration.
We also offer a separate craft programme for adults, and it is in the atmospheric old kitchen where our year-round programme of Lauriston Lectures takes place.
The Adult and Family Craft Workshop Programme has more than 60 different arts and craft classes and activities throughout the year, many of which take their inspiration from the beautiful Edwardian interior of the Castle. Workshops listed as 'Family' have something to offer the full age spectrum from toddlers, to teenagers, to grandparents, although occasionally a minimum age limit is set. Please note that children under 8 years of age cannot be left unattended at our workshops.
Over the year there are around 30 different lectures to choose from. These lectures offer a rare opportunity to listen to some of Scotland’s foremost experts. Topics in the 2012 lecture programme include: Robert Louis Stevenson, Downton Abbey - the truth, The Makar's Choice - Liz Lochhead, and The History of Photography in Edinburgh. A tour of the Castle with coffee and cakes is included in the price, with the opportunity to meet the lecturer and visit parts of the building not usually open to the public. The lectures themselves last two to two and a half hours and cost £8, but for special events, the price, duration and refreshments provided may differ - see individual listings for details.
Our workshops and lectures are hugely popular. Pre-booking and advance payment (where applicable) are essential. To secure your place, call Margaret Findlay on 0131 529 3963 or email margaret.findlay@edinburgh.gov.uk. After booking your place, payment cheques (payable to The City of Edinburgh Council) and a note listing the event(s) you are booking should be sent direct to Lauriston Castle, 2a Cramond Road South, Edinburgh EH4 5QD.
