In Victorian times, Edinburgh’s Old Town was alive with the cries of the street vendors, beggars and showmen. It was these hardy men and women who provided the necessities of life. Knife grinders, shoe menders, match sellers and caddies mixed with lawyers and academics.
Ned Holt was a well known Edinburgh actor and showman. To supplement his income, he painted the colourful characters among whom he worked. These simple sketches are invaluable social documents, capturing the spirit of the times. This display of Ned’s work is accompanied by specially written poems about each of the characters by poet Donald Campbell.
