Learn all about the History of Edinburgh in our fantastic new FREE family workshops at Museum of Edinburgh on the historic Royal Mile in Edinburgh.

Experience one of our special costumed performances or sample one of our unique art workshops. Make a furry Greyfriars Bobby, devise a unique plan of your ideal city, create a shiny tea-set, make a Georgian dress-up peg dolly, a pottery plate or a quirky clay creature tile.

There is also our new free Family Activity Area in the gallery to explore. There is something for everyone! Learn about the history of Edinburgh, from prehistoric times to the present day. Explore endless art activities. Build and decorate an Edinburgh Old Town Tenement, make 18th and 19th century figures in historical clothes, make beautiful stained glass pictures, find objects and draw details on our detail quest-sheets and experience our wonderful variety of art materials and texture baskets.

Spend time looking at our replica objects.  Handle them and learn about what life was like in the 18th and 19th centuries. Learn about ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Edinburgh. Have fun dressing up in our varied and numerous quality historical replica costumes – you could become an 18th century lady or her maid, or dress up as James Forsyth, an 18th century Edinburgh shoemaker. Relax in our library corner, and dip into our wide variety of reference books about Edinburgh and Scottish History.

Play at being Sherlock Holmes with our museum trail sheets, and object identification sheets. You will be taken on a journey through the museum and discover more about fascinating objects. Explore our trade map interactive.  You will learn in a very fun way about how Edinburgh developed in the 18th century from the port of Leith, and what countries Edinburgh traded with.
