I am a practising ceramic artist. My current body of work explores my interest in box forms. I am influenced by the mechanism of the box and the way in which they act as containers for space. I also reference mechanical processes, eidetic images, humour and nostalgia within my work. I use component parts such as keys, light bulbs and wires to create a flow within the pieces and cats, robins or doves to add something light hearted. I enjoy balancing things, the dichotomy of the inside and outside of the box or the deliberate tumble of broken keys contrasting with efficiency of the machine.
I choose to use the material parian which was developed to resemble marble. I construct my work by combining hand built and slip cast elements. The box forms are constructed methodically and the slip cast pieces added very quickly. They are fired once to 1245° C. All the pieces are unique.
Ben Murdock is a practising ceramic artist. After completing his postgraduate diploma at Edinburgh College of Art in 2003 he set up his studio and has since participated in exhibitions and fairs both in the UK and abroad.
