Aeneas Wilder

The work shown in this exhibition details the video documentation of a series of experimental prototypes created over the period of 8 weeks while on residency at the Centre de Sculpture Est Nord Est, Canada, between September and November 1999. The installations themselves are created through a simple process of stacking and balancing. The severe limits within the building of each work bring a discipline to the creative process that allows for infinite possibilities within these restricted parameters. The end result - the video documentation presented here - shows the destructive element within the work.
This video documentation shows the point of collapse within the overall creative process. These eight examples show a variety of exploratory forms, using two building unit sizes - flat blocks and longer thin lengths. The works were experimental and allowed for a continuing number of later works to be developed and exhibited, including permanent public art works.
In 1998 Aeneas Wilder began to work with uniform lengths of wood to make free standing and increasingly complex, structures that are highly original. His work is characterised by simplicity, precision and economy, while the works explore conceptually complex themes and ideas. He has exhibited his works extensively in Asia, Europe and North America.
