We are offering upper primary school classes the unique opportunity to visit the Silver of the Stars exhibition and look at and discuss contemporary silver and our historical si...

Silver of the Stars exhibition:

Ten international celebrities in the fields of film, fashion, music, theatre and literature have been paired with ten of Scotland’s finest silversmiths. Each pair has collaborated on the design for a piece of silver on that most beautiful moment, “a drink with a close friend”, resulting in a hugely varied collection of drinking vessels that ranges from absinthe goblets to teapots to claret jugs.

Lesson Plan:

Over the centuries, humans have created special vessels to contain precious liquids such as water, wine, coffee or tea. We will look at the beautiful silverware in our own collection, explore the impact of tea and coffee on Britain and its trading partners, discover how 18th century society elevated the drinking of tea into a fine social art and how the origins of modern business began in 18th century coffee houses. We will also find out about hallmarking and the role of the “Hammermen” in medieval Edinburgh.

We will compare the traditional styles of silverware with the examples contemporary silversmiths have created for living Scottish celebrities, before creating our own fabulous 3-D artwork inspired by the exhibition.

Workshop sessions are available for Primary 4 - 7. We can provide a packed lunch space in the museum after the activity.

For further information and to book, please contact Margaret Findlay, Public Programmes Manager, on 0131 529 3963 or via margaret.findlay@edinburgh.gov.uk
