Come Awa is The Thrive Archive’s latest community project inspired by fishing, food, feisty women and family told through story and song.

Fresh frae the Forth and carrying the weight of a grown man on her back the fishwives of Newhaven walked over 2 miles into Edinburgh to sell their catch.

Their melodic cry “Caller– Ou!” would fill the streets and markets of Edinburgh.  Respected for their sales patter they would bargain with their customers over the price of a fish:

”Ye little ken their worth…a fish is noo a fish today… they’re just men’s lives.”

These ‘Cheery Jenny’s’ were some of the first women in business and whilst their menfolk caught the fish their wives and daughters were responsible for collecting the bait, baiting the lines, selling the fish, tending the house, the weans and looking out for each other.

The ‘pin up girls’ of the 1850’s, their traditional songs and stories tell of a tight knit community. Descended from the Flemish shipwrights who built the Great Michael and known as Bow-Tow’s, the folk of Newhaven stood together through feast and famine, their lives revolving around the sea.

Whatever the weather Newhaven artist and storyteller Jan Bee Brown will be bringing her creel of stories to the museum courtyard this summer and will invite you to bargain for a fishy story or feisty song, simply pay her what you think it is worth.
