Italian renaissance artists such as Botticelli, Raphael and Titian were concerned with creating images of beautiful women, and their paintings of female figures are still admire...

The Renaissance also saw a literary debate about the qualities of female beauty – the physical features of the ideal woman were minutely discussed. All these texts and images were made by men. This lecture will consider how women reacted to this new cultural obsession.  Using materials as diverse as arsenic, dead lizards and cat dung, renaissance women sought to meet beauty ideals through means that might be quite familiar to modern audiences – body hair removal, dieting and cosmetics.

Dr Jill Burke is a senior lecturer in Italian Renaissance Visual Culture in the School of History of Art at the University of Edinburgh. She has published several articles, essays and books on Italian Renaissance art.
