The Scottish claims for educational democracy is challenged from a standpoint of the opportunities, or the lack of them, for women to gain entry to Scotland's universities.

Their progress, in spite of considerable opposition is charted, from around 1850 to the present day.

This is explained in terms of social and educational history making comparisons between female and male achievement over 160+ years. The phenomenal progress of women, ultimately overtaking men at all levels from degree to doctoral qualifications, is discussed and quantified.

Dr David Dick OBE was a Telecommunication draughtsman; hydro-power engineer, lecturer, senior lecturer, Head of Department, Vice Principal (Napier College of Science and Technology) and Principal (Stevenson College Edinburgh).  His current research topic is into gender equality in education.
