Decorative Art

‘Decorative art’, or ‘Applied art’ are terms often used for a variety of arts and crafts where the concepts of design and beauty are applied to everyday objects such as furniture, fabrics and household goods. Just because an object is useful does not mean that it should not also be beautiful.

Decorative art items can be made from all sorts of materials – wood, ceramics, glass, metals, textiles and much more. The items produced could include anything from cups and chairs to cushion covers and carpets.

You can see our main collections of decorative art at the Museum of Edinburgh and Lauriston Castle.
