Photography and filming

Guidance Note for Visitors

Visitors are welcome to film or to take non-flash photographs of exhibits and works of art on display where this is for personal or educational use.

Formal permission is required for any professional photography or filming for use in publications, for broadcast or for commercial purposes.  The use of tripods and other equipment will also require formal permission, and enquirers are encouraged to make an appointment to access the galleries outwith normal opening hours.

Edinburgh Museums & Galleries may not have permission to authorise photography of items on loan from other museums or individuals.  These can feature as exhibits in permanent galleries and in temporary exhibitions.  In these cases ‘No Photography Allowed’ notices will be put up around the gallery space.

Photography and filming of other visitors within Edinburgh Museums & Galleries venues is not permitted.
